Production of Neurotransmitters by the Oral Microbiota

The possibility that oral bacteria synthesize precursors of human neurotransmitters is being explored in this project in collaboration with Darwin Bioprospecting Company. This project is framed within the general hypothesis that there exists an "Oral-Systemic connection", by which metabolites produced by the oral microbiome are systemically disseminated through the blood and saliva, with important consequences for human health. There is substantial evidence for the existence of a gut-brain axis, but is there also an oral-brain and an oral-systemic connection?

Table above shows some neurotransmitters synthesized by gut microorganisms. Can oral bacteria also produce any of these compounds or their precursors?
